They say it's like Christmas for all football fans, but it was the 49er faithful unwrapped the most presents on draft weekend this year, only adding to the anticipation of the team's run at the NFC West title.
Last blog went over the addition of tackle Anthony Davis from Rutgers and guard Mike Iupati of Idaho, and if those picks had fans thrilled, day two left them ecstatic. Adding to the physical theme of the 49ers draft, the team selected USC safety Taylor Mays in the second round and Penn State linebacker Navorro Bowman in the third.
Mays is a physical force that made receivers fear crossing patterns every saturday during his stint as a Trojan. The 6'3" 230 pound safety will add to a defense that already includes heavy hitters such as Patrick Willis, Dashon Goldson, and Takeo Spikes, just to name a few.
Bowman stands six feet tall and 242 pounds and according to NFL.com was the highest graded player drafted in the entire third round. Adding another physical presence to the linebacker depth, as they did last year with 5th round pick Scott Mckillop, will only make the team better.
On day two, fans waited out the 4th and 5th round as the team did not have any picks, but once the team made their three selections in the sicth round, it was clear the team wasn't done with their theme.
With their first sixth round pick, the 49ers selected Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon. At 6 feet tall and 233 pounds, Dixon will add a bruising back behind the soon-to-be dominant offensive line. With their second 6th round pick, it was a tight end from Pittsburgh by the name of Nate Byham, a second team All Big East selection who is considered an outstand run blocker.
The draft rounded out with another sixth round pick, wide receiver/kick returner Kyle Williams, and cornerback Phillip Adams. Williams was an outstanding threat to score every time he touched the ball at Arizona State University and Adams is considered to be at his best in press coverage.
With all the new talent on the team, it's clear head coach Mike Singletary is getting the ingredients he needs to cook up a championship. The team will be propelled on September 20th, 2010 as the fans will Rock the Stick as the 49ers look to defeat the World Champion New Orleans Saints.
